To ensure that accessibility works in practice, it is important to review the complete user journey rather than isolated building elements.

Vortex Access conducts user journey assessments to evaluate how different users arrive at, enter, move through, use and exit a building or facility. The assessment considers whether the environment provides a continuous, safe, understandable and dignified experience for diverse users.

A compliant individual element may still fail if the overall journey is fragmented. For example, an accessible toilet may exist but may not be reachable through an accessible route; an accessible entrance may be available but difficult to identify; or signage may be present but not readable or understandable for all users.

A user journey assessment typically considers:

  • Arrival by vehicle, taxi, public transport or pedestrian route
  • Accessible parking, drop-off and approach routes
  • Main entrance identification and ease of access
  • Reception, security and front-of-house experience
  • Horizontal and vertical circulation
  • Access to key facilities, services and amenities
  • Toilets, seating, counters, waiting areas and service points
  • Signage, wayfinding, lighting, acoustics and visual contrast
  • Emergency egress and assisted evacuation interface
  • Practical usability for different user groups

The assessment supports clients in identifying barriers across the full experience of the building and helps improve access, independence, comfort, dignity and operational usability.
